IXL Learning Review

Seventh grade has been all work and not a whole lot of fun for Francesca this year. I was excited to receive an annual subscription to IXL from IXL Learning-it seemed like it could be a perfect way to reinforce what she’s been learning and a fun means by which to break up some of the monotony. Spoiler alert: it is!

IXL is an online comprehensive program for grades K-12 that covers

  • math
  • language arts
  • science
  • social studies
  • and spanish!

Math, language arts, and spanish are offered for grades K-12, while science and social studies are offered for grades 2-8. This is not a comprehensive curriculum, but rather a supplemental program to help reinforce learning. This has been a fantastic way for Francesca to get some practice in by answering questions that solidify concepts we’ve been working on. IXL is an adaptive program, so as your student answers questions they will receive personalized skill recommendations based on work completed.

How we used it & What we thought

IXL is broken up into two main categories: Learning and Anyalytics.

Learning-here you will find tabs to navigate through the five subject areas, as well as:

  • Recommendations: Skills recommended just for your student, based on recent work completed
  • Diagnostic: This is a great place to start. By answering a series of questions the program will give your student diagnostic levels and suggestions. There is a helpful option to click “I haven’t learned this yet”, which can help avoid some frustration if your student encounters a question on material they haven’t yet learned.
  • Standards: IXL aligns to state standards. Find yours here.
  • Awards: One of the fun aspects of IXL. Students earn awards and certificates as they go.

Analytics-here you’ll find lots of helpful tools to track your student’s progress and time spent learning.

  • Usage Details: detailed log of topics covered, questions answered, and time spent. You can easily tell at a glance what your student has been actively working on and for how long
  • Trouble Spots: lists topics and questions your student struggled with
  • Scores: Score chart broken down by subject. This section lists the skill, smart score, questions answered, time spent, and last practiced.
  • Questions: detailed list of questions answered, broken up by subject
  • Progress: shows your student’s progress and improvement

IXL was a breeze to set up, with an account for me and an account for Francesca, and we were up and running in no time. Since Francesca is at grade level or above in all subjects, I just let her jump in and pick whatever subject appealed to her, with the instruction to work in at least the 7th grade level. We’ve incorporated IXL into our daily school routine, and it gives her a break from the book work that she really looks forward to. I appreciate that she is able to navigate the site herself and work on whatever subject she’s feeling like doing on any given day. The Analytics tools have been invaluable as they let me just jump on anytime and see many different detailed logs of her progress and what she’s been working on.

Francesca’s thoughts:

“I enjoy using IXL because there are many subjects to do, and a lot of information to go over, so if you don’t feel like doing a subject for very long, you can move on to something else. I also like that IXL has spanish. I have always wanted to know more spanish, so I spent a lot of time in this subject. I like that they teach you every day basic words and phrases that are useful, unlike Latin where the first things you learn are phrases like ‘The bad chiefs prepared for war’. The website has a nice format, is easy to use, and is fun.”

IXL is an exceptional program that we love and will continue to use in our homeschool. I highly recommend it, but don’t just take my word for it. Click below to see what my fellow Homeschool Review Crew members had to say.
